Explain the Fee!

Current AT&T Customer

I thought you might be interested in seeing my own correspondence with Sprint via Dan@Sprint.com. The conversation took place from May 21 - 24.
.
.
From Me:
My wife and I are AT&T customers with an expired contracts looking for a new home. I almost got the Verizon Droid Incredible a few weeks ago, but have held out to see your HTC Evo 4G as I found Sprint's pricing very attractive. But now that there's an extra $10 monthly surcharge for mearly using the Evo, your prices have reached the same level as Verizon and AT&T.
Please, rethink this "Premium Data" surcharge. It's not the extra money - I realize the Evo is a special phone - it's because it's a monthly charge. Over the course of two and a half years (the length of time I've kept my current smartphone), with two Evo 4Gs, that's an extra $600. Sprint has stated time and again that the "Premium Data" surcharge isn't about the 4G, so if you're looking to recover the cost of the phone, please just charge more for it to begin with.
Disappointed,

From Sprint:

Dear [redacted],
Thank you for contacting us through Dan@sprint.com.  I appreciate you taking the time to contact us in regards to the EVO and the $10 charge for the Premium Data.  The $10 charge is for the rich data experience
that it brings to the EVO, its like going from a regular TV to a High Definition TV.  The Adobe Flash ensures the rich internet content.  The $10 fee is not for the 4G, but for the rich internet experience.  With
Sprints Everything Data and the Any Mobile Anytime plus the $10 Premium Data ultimate data usage beats the competition.
I will forward your comments about $10 Premium Data on to the appropriate group for consideration. Your feedback is appreciated to help us to continually improve our products, services and overall
customer experience.
If you have any other questions or concerns in the future feel free to contact me on 757-223-3372, Monday through Friday, 9:00 am-6:00 pm EST. I can also be reached via an email through Dan@Sprint.com.
Thank you again for contacting Sprint.  We appreciate your business.
Sincerely,

Sprint
From Me:
[redacted],
Thank you for the information.
As I understand it, the EVO only has Flash Lite and HTC has been including this on their Android handsets for quite a while now. Android 2.2 is required for full Flash 10.1, but the EVO only runs Android 2.1. Even your own Sprint Hero has Flash support using Flash Lite. So to say that the EVO offers an Internet experience beyond other handsets because of Flash support is incorrect.
I realize my solitary concern will not change much. But I do feel that Sprint should know that adding a monthly charge with no technical justification does not sit well with me. And from what I read on the
Sprint forums and all over the Internet, it doesn't sit well with a lot of people. In my opinion, it would be better to raise the price of the Everything Data plan by $10 than to require an additional feature that customers can see no real reason for. Like I said before, it's not about the money; it's the perception of  wrongdoing that we consumers are upset about. We see an extra $10 monthly charge appear for apparently no real reason and we begin to wonder what "feature" we'll be required to have next. Sprint's all-in-one approach with the Everything Data plans has been a real advantage over Verizon and AT&T; please don't lose that.
