Explain the Fee!

Will the Epic 4G require “Premium Data”?

I've been wondering what the next 4G phones from Sprint will offer.  So far we've seen the leaked specs/pictures of Samsung's Galaxy S Pro Epic 4G and it's going to be Sprint's 2nd phone that offers 4G.  Will this new phone allow the user to experience "data" like never before?  I mean, if.. you forget about the EVO that was launched earlier this month, but surely this new phone will offer that "something extra".

Sprint originally stated that the "Premium Data" was NOT for 4G service.  We should expect to hear the same thing about their newest phone as well, right?  It appears that this is the way that Sprint is now going with their phone plans, instead of increasing the package rate, they force you to have this additional "REQUIRED", "MANDATORY", "NON-REMOVABLE" add-on called "Premium Data".

I'm VERY curious to see if the Samsung Galaxy S Pro will continue the legacy of requiring this data add-on, because we might actually see Sprint change the terminology a little bit.

Currently, this is how Sprint.com describes the "Premium Data":

  • A wicked fast processor to make your apps run smoother and faster on our Sprint 3G and 4G network
  • Top quality media experience with oversized screen, high resolution video and HD recording
  • High-quality pics to snap and share with friends and family

We've all seen the replies from Dan@Sprint.com that state we're in a First Class seat on an airplane with the following explanations: 4.3" screen, 8MP camera/camcorder, kickstand..

What will be the "wicked" reason be for the Galaxy S Pro Epic 4G to require "Premium Data"?  Will it be the 4" screen, or the hardware keyboard? What about the "Super" AMOLED screen?

What is the definition of "wicked fast"?  What's an "oversized" screen?  What's "high quality"?  We need those questions answered, because if you compare the EVO and the Galaxy S Pro, they have different technical hardware specifications:

  • EVO's Snapdragon 1GHz CPU vs. Galaxy's "Superior" Hummingbird 1GHz CPU - Which one is "wicked"?
  • EVO's 4.3" screen vs. Galaxy's 4" screen? - Who's the oversized one?
  • EVO's 8MP camera vs. Galaxy's 5MP camera - What defines "High-Quality?" (HTC Hero has a 5MP camera as well!)

Will Sprint throw a blanket statement and just declare both of them to have different degrees of "Premium"-ness?

I honestly still can't believe that they're defining a NETWORK DATA ADD-ON with TECHNICAL hardware specifications..

Time will only tell, but let's hope that more people will stop blindly accepting illogical responses and start asking the question-- Can you Explain the Fee?

  • I'd rather pay the $10 and keep unlimited bandwidth then go to a metered plan

I was told by a retentions supervisor that any 3g and 4g phone will have the fee. So much for Dan Hesse saying that there won't be an additional fee for 4g.

i sent sprint a messge...lets see if their creative writers can think of something clever to write back...

  • Jonathon

I saw an article on Android Spin about this phone on Sunday. I immediately regained hope. I will be waiting patiently to see how Sprint tries to cover their ass on this phone. If I'm really lucky, it will sell like crap and not have a fee.

and of course. the only difference between the galaxy s and the galaxy s pro is the keyboard, flash and 4g. and since it isn't because of 4g. they are going to have to try and explain away charging people $10/month for a keyboard and flash.
but the flip side of that would be that they should also charge people for the Galaxy s as it is pretty similar as far as hardware goes. I have never thought to myself"I really want to take some pictures and send it to everyone I know but if only I had a flash for my pictures..."

I'm positive that the Galaxy will have this "premium data" fee. This is how Sprint going to recoup their loss by turning potential customers away. However, if there is a change that Galaxy doesn't require the fee, then I guess I will see my EVO for a galaxy.

    hahaha, I like this:

"I honestly still can't believe that they're defining a NETWORK DATA ADD-ON with TECHNICAL hardware specifications.."

    you are awesome!!

Maybe when people start getting their sprint bills they will realize what they have done. I was ready to move away from my Pre and get the Evo today. No way now!

I think a lot of people are missing the point. It seems like even the majority of those that are smart enough to realize they are being extorted are still are still giving in to the dark side and buying the EVO anyway. They are sold out of these phones, again! I was in the sprint store this weekend and there were probably a dozen people that asked to get one while I was there. As long as there are people standing in line, willing to be taken advantage of, they will never do away with this fee. Sprint doesn't really care how much bitching and moaning we do about it after the fact, so long as they are getting their money. Sprint knows that they are doing wrong. Otherwise they wouldn't continually equivocate with all their vague phrasing and circumvent the real question. If they didn't know they were in the wrong they wouldn't feel the need to constantly vomit out the company line about how they are still the cheaper option. They'll keep f'ing us over till we make them stop. Corporate codes of ethics have gone the way of the dinosaur. Now they take advantage of every loophole and vulnerability until it is no longer in their best interest. We are never going to get a reasonable explanation of the fee, because there isn't one. It's a tax on those too interested in a fancy new phone to avoid being taken advantage of. In short, STOP BUYING THE DAMN PHONE. Only once they have a surplus of these laying around gathering dust will they indirectly admit to being greedy bastards and kill the fee (at least until the next sneaky idea develops).

I think that with the extra fee sprint will still be cheaper than any other carrier.. the fee is pure BS , its just then getting the money back for the phone.. $199 for the phone plus the $240 over 2 years.. there is your $500 dollar phone...

I wonder what will happen after the 2 years are up and you want to change to another phone... will the fee be removed then?

The only other thing they could say the "fee" is for would be the wireless hot spot since the other phones don't have the tethering option. That would at least make some logical sense, but the never mention it. I would consider that a valid reason since you would be able to phone as a modem to multiple devices which would cause them to possible incure more fees. But correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think verizon charges extra for the pre plus or pixi plus which has 5 hot spot capability.

Ah, but Dave, that's what the $30 "tethering fee" is for!

Thanks for the post about the Galaxy S Pro. Keep holdin' Sprint's feet to the fire! I would be happy if Sprint would just say: "This is a charge for 4G (4G not available in all areas)." As it stands, Sprint is setting a BAD precedent by saying that the charge is for the hardware features of the phone. This fee is BS! When I asked if they would drop it if I bought the phone unsubsidized, they said no! I don't get it!?! How can the fee be for the hardware features but, at the same time, they say that if I own the phone at full cost, they will still charge the fee? I was going to go with Sprint, but now I think I'll go to Verizon when the Droid X comes out. I don't care if I have to pay $600 more over the course of the contract, I will not do business with a company that is committing fraudulent misrepresentation!

  • Dave F

This $10 fee is ridiculous. That's an extra $240 over two years. I worked for Sprint for 4 years and like having a newer better phone. If this is how all of the worth wile phones are going to be, it might be time to switch carriers. It would be cheaper to pay a cancellation fee than pay $10 a month. Maybe we'll get luck with the Samsung, but I'm not holding my breath. Will be interesting to see. Maybe a new HP/Palm will come out and save the day. LOL

  • Sprint Fail

Nice job with the write up. Wake up Sprint users and demand an explanation that makes sense or be content to lease your hardware from this time forward.

  • 99.99% sure the Galaxy S Pro will have the $10 fee. It has the same basic hardware specs and feature set as the Evo. I don't see why won't charge the extra fee for the Galaxy S Pro if they're getting away with it on the Evo. I'll be glad if I'm wrong though, but the way things are going, it looks like any smartphone worth getting on Sprint will likely have this $10 fee associated with it.
